News archive for 2004

Merry Christmas to everyone from the MultiZilla project team members; John, Raj and HJ.

MultiZilla version 1.7.0.1c has been released at 2:30PM (Pacific Standard Time) today. This update has only a single patch, to fix a bug in Mozilla MailNews (middle-click broken in Mozilla 1.7.5).

Thanks to Evzen Polenka for bringing this to our attention.

MultiZilla version 1.7.0.1b has been released at 6:AM (Pacific Standard Time) today. This update has two important patches to fix the issues mentioned in bug 8580.

Thanks to Petr Cerny for bringing this to our attention.

We are verry happy to announce that we found a new QA person. His name is John Griffiths and John is a long time MultiZilla user. He will do QA work whenever he can, but please don't expect him to be the mad man I am.

We would like to remind you that you should ask questions concerning QA either via the mailing list or our newsgroup, but please don't SPAM him e-mail address, thank you!

MultiZilla version 1.7.0.1a has been released at 8:PM (Pacific Standard Time) today. There is simply too much changed in this release to be listed here, so we hope you've taken notice of the changes on the projects weblog over time.

We would like to mention that bug 7732 is fixed in this release, so Drag and Drop can be used in the bookmarks manager! Also, let us know if anything is not fully functional, so that HJ can fixed it a.s.a.p. Thanks for testing and Happy Holidays!

Note: please allow a few hours for all download mirrors to get in sync with the main mirror.

The current nighlies for MultiZilla version 1.7.0.0 should not be used with Mozilla 1.7.5.

We are working on a new release, one specifically made for this Mozilla release. We hope to finish this MultiZilla release a.s.a.p. HJ's test version for Mozilla 1.7.5 seems to work, but he likes to do more test first.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0p) available for download / installation from the installation page. This version has several bug fixes and one important patch to solve the Secunia background tab security issues (SA12712), which is not even (yet) fixed in Mozilla, but soon it will!

The Content Blocker has now also been modified. This to prevent other possible background tab security issues. We hope that you can get used to this forced tab switching, and if not, you know where to find us (we are preparing a new patch, for a new preference already).

The Open Tab and Ask Me buttons in the Permission Manager will now automatically be enabled, on the Popups category panel, and stay disabled on the rest of the panels.

You might have troubles installing MultiZilla with a recent nightly, simply because of Mozilla bug 272764, but we do have a work around for you (See also bug 8499). HJ added directions on how to install other extensions, in that Mozilla bug report, as well. We hope this helps you somehow.

Please feel free you contact us via the mailing list or newsgroup if you have additional questions.

We would like to change the five (5) tab permission buttons on the status bar a bit, so that is why we need your feedback.

The plan is to use these buttons for the Content Blocker, when enabled, to A) show the state of blocked content of the current site and B) to add an easy toggle button to block / allow content. What do you think? Wouldn't that be more fun?

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0o) available for download / installation from the installation page. This version has several bug fixes and one important patch for an old history bug. There are also two new menu items in QPrefs / Extension Management to disable / enable all extensions at once.

We have two new checkboxes on the Tabs and Links pref panels, one on each panel. The first checkbox, on the Tabs pref panel, can be used to open new tabs for menu Tools / Search the Web. The second checkbox, on the Links pref panel, can be used to copy URL's to the clipboard. All you need is one ctrl+mouse-click on the target tab.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0n) available for download / installation from the installation page. This extends the extension management feature, fixes problems with QPrefs privacy management not being in line with the privacy manager and various tab session manager bugs.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0k) available for download / installation from the installation page. This update makes 'secure sites' (HTTPS) more evident by displaying a security icon in, and changing the background color of, the location bar.

Mozila Firefox users might recognise this feature, but it is not the exactly the same source code, so your 'hacks' in userChrome.css won't work! Please read the project weblog for more information.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0j) available for download / installation from the installation page. Please read the project weblog for more information.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0i) available for download / installation from the installation page. Please read the project weblog for more information.

The current news page (i.e. this one!) has been updated with a new style. Please bear with us as we continue to work out the kinks.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0E) available for download / installation from the installation page. Please read the project weblog for more information.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.7.0.0A) available for download / installation from the installation page. The main focus for this nightly was to make it compatible with Mozilla builds dated 27 July 2004 and later. We have also fixed some very important bugs (security related) and are now concentrating on fixing a whole lot of other bugs for the Content Blocker and Permission Manager.

Today we replaced the old (version 2) Online Update Checker with version 3. Click on your update button on the MultiZilla toolbar to check it out right now!

Have you seen HJ's blog lately? If not, please go read this page. No shit chat but real development issues only!

Today we replaced our priorversions page with a much better one. Go checkout the new page

Today we replaced our installation page with a much better one. Go checkout the new page

We started to update the website today. The website will get a more global layout over the next weeks or so. Spot a typo? Please report this on our newsgroup at public.mozdev.multizilla. Thank you for helping.

HJ returned safely after being away for almost four months. We might expect a boost in development within a week or so. Please let us know what you think needs HJ's immediate attention.

We also have an urgent request. We need a new QA contact. Neil (and Wendy) died this summer (head on collision) so he can't help us anymore :( Please step up and help us to help you (and other people). Thank you!

Due to personal issues, the lead (and only) developer on MultiZilla (HJ) will be away, for at least several weeks and no work will be done during that time. Any patches will still be accepted (just add Raj to the CC list for the bug or email him directly).

MultiZilla version 1.6.4.0B has been released with the fix for bug 6338.
Note: please allow up to 24 hours for all download mirrors to be updated.

Today we released MultiZilla version v1.6.4.0A. This version is now available for download / installation from the installation page.

Due to problems at MozDev, the database/CVS server has been unavailable for the past several days, which caused an inability for us to commit new work to CVS or update the website, and prevented access to Bugzilla. Hopefully this has now been sorted out.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.6.3.2F) available for download / installation from the installation page.

  • Bug Fixes
  • 1) Changing properties in the Tab Session Manager no longer pollutes multizilla.rdf

  • 7) The Blocked Window Menu button on the status bar is now initialized correctly at startup.
  • Notes
  • We only tested it with Windows XP (classic theme) so there might still be some (minor) glitches because it is impossible for us to test MultiZilla with all available themes, add-ons and operating systems, so don't hesitate to file bugs but please file detailed bug reports only!
  • Please consider to contribute and/or donate to this project. We are very grateful for your support and we keep improving MultiZilla, the GoogleBox, the Content Blocker and OSXilla, with or without your support. Have fun now ;)

  • Note: The pref panels 'Confirmations' and 'Buttons' are also been modified for 1 and 4

We planned to release a new version of MultiZilla but that won't happen soon. The reason for this is that there are several issues with Tab Sessions that I like to resolved first. We already have this nice looking Tab Session Manager, but now it's time to make tab session work. This requires a rewrite of large parts of our source code so this will take me some time.

A new nightly with updates for tab sessions should be available as early as next week. Maybe even this week end. I hope that some of you are willing to test my work because that will help me to help you.

The current nightly is now fully compatible with Mozilla nightlies dated after 2004-04-16. Please consider to read HJ's project blog. It has some interesting news facts from time to time.

The bookmarks sidebar and other tree-widgets will not work with MultiZilla 1.6.3.2 or less on nightly builds after 2004-04-16 due to Mozilla bug 221619 being fixed. We are working to bring out a new build that will work properly in post 0416 nightlies. Please be patient.

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.6.3.1D) available for download / installation from the installation page. Most of the work was done to improve the Permission Manager but there are also several other fixed for the Tab Session Manager, the new User Agent Manager and the build in Content Blocker. More information will be add later (when I have a bit more time).

The April Fool Joke has been up for almost a week now, so it is time to clearify that all this donated money was just a joke. For some it was even a bad joke! Well, just look at it this way 1 04 2004 Isn't that April 1? Next, you also might want to check this attribute alt="DINKYTOY.COM" So once more. The $100k donation was just another APRIL FOOLS JOKE !!!

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.6.3.1C) available for download / installation from the installation page. Most of the work was done to improve the new Tab Session Manager. Future updates should be more fun, because we've also done some cleanups.

  • Changes
  • 1) 'Tab', 'Window' and 'Selected' buttons are replaced with 'Add', 'Merge' and 'Open' buttons
  • 2) New images for the 'Add' 'Merge' and 'Open' buttons added
    • Merge button will be enabled in a future update.
  • 3) Add button adds a new tab session with the tabs from the last active browser window
    • this will be extented to all open browser windows in a next update.
  • 4) Missing tooltips for the toolbar buttons added
  • 5) The Properties button will now open a new browser window, when needed
  • 6) 'Reopen...' in context menu changed to 'Open...'
  • 7) Context menu order changed to match the button order
  • 8) New menu item 'Merge' added (will be enabled in a future update)
  • 9) Fixed some JavaScript (strict) errors
  • Bookmark Manager bug
  • The bookmark manager will now reduce the favicons images to 16 * 16 pixels

There is a new MultiZilla update (v1.6.3.1B) available for download / installation from the installation page. This is an important update because we finally fixed the XPInstallation problem (-239 error). We also improved theme support for the new Permission Manager and Tab Session Manager. The User Agent Manager has also been face lifted in this update, but we're still working on it! (Now I really gotta run, later...)

  • Fixed Bug
  • There are a lot of smaller bugs fixed, to many to list here, just give it a try :-)

Today we released MultiZilla version 1.6.3.1A with the new/improved (ßeta) version of the Tab Session Manager. Near future revision updates of MultiZilla 1.6.3.1 versions will have several smaller enhancements that are requested over time.

  • Happy Birthday MultiZilla ;)
  • The MultiZilla project turns three today (on mozdev.org). We've accomplished a lot in these years and I still enjoy working on this project. Btw, what do you think of this slogan:

MultiZilla™

The Best Has Yet To Come!
  • Thanks to:
  • the Mozilla Foundation for such a great browser, mozdev.org for being our host for over the last three years, Raj Bhaskar for being our web master, Neil Pryde for being one heck of a friend and our QA person and everyone that helped me in the past. My God bless all of you.
  • Special Thanks To:
  • Special thanks to everyone that donated a total of $104.200,40. You've made me the happy owner of this Range Rover V8. My kids are totally in love with this car. We've had the pleasure of driving a black Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 and a black Mercedes ML 500, but there is really nothing that beats this Range Rover:
  • DINKYTOY.COM
  • Well, the original 18 inch rims suck, so we ordered a set of 20 inch rims. The kids wanted a DVD system in the back, so that will also be installed. A handy GPS tracking device will also be installed, happy insurance, happy me... I already lost one car so... All we have to do now is wait for...
  • Notes
  • People, I suck as web designer, so I ask you to help me. Care to join our team? Yeah, it really sucks when I have to do just about everything. I would much rather work on improvements, instead of playing for web designer. Can you blame me? Oh, did I tell you that I suck as web designer?

There's a new MultiZilla update (v1.6.3.0E) available for download / installation from the installation page.

  • Fixed Bugs
  • Bug 6055 Tab Popup Indicator feature disables Drag & Drop
  • Bug 6025 Permission Manager/Content Blocker failures (additional patches)
  • Unlisted Fixed Bugs
  • 1) Duplicated menu entry in View Menu fixed (caused by a mozilla change)
  • 2) JavaScript error when trying to close User Agent Manager (part of a future version was accidentally added)
  • Notes
  • The Browser Spoofing list in QPrefs is temporarily disabled, because of mozilla bug 238413.

There's a new MultiZilla update (v1.6.3.0D) available for download / installation from the installation page. This is an important update because we fixed the XPInstallation problem caused by a missing byte.

  • Use a new profile when you encounter an -239 chrome error (mozilla bug 237991)
  • Disable your XUL cache to prevent theme errors (mozilla bug 237407)
  • Mozilla might crash when you update MultiZilla in your profile directory (mozilla bug 237991)
  • Quote from a mozilla developer Benjamin Smedberg
  • The systemic problem I mentioned is that we don't (yet) have a way of disabling profile-installed extensions, so crashes upgrading versions is very likely and not really preventable. (mozilla bug 237991).

There's a new MultiZilla update (v1.6.3.0C) available for download / installation from the installation page.

  • Fixed Bug
  • Bug 6025 Permission Manager/Content Blocker failures (first step)

Today we released MultiZilla version 1.6.3.0. This release has an improved (ßeta) version of the Permission Manager and The Content Blocker is now also part of MultiZilla.

The content Blocker was written by HJ, at times when Adblock was still really AdHIDE, but it lacked a Permission Manager and that is why we didn't release it earlier, but that is no longer an issue so here we GO.

My timing sucks, but I won't be available for some time. I've got other more important (sworn in) duties ahead of me, effected immediately. I will try to continue to work on MultiZilla, but at a lower pace for some time. Later people.

There's a new MultiZilla nightly (v1.6.2.1D) available for download / installation from the installation page. This is an important bookmarks and popup blocker update for Mozilla 1.7a. Raj and Neil are currently testing HJ's latest work. His latest work is all about the new/improved Permission Manager for MultiZilla. It will soon be introduced but it isn't available yet. We like to check it one more time, before we release it (this also enables HJ to fix the most serious bugs, before you run into them). Quality should be assured but is not guarantied.

Team lead HJ will be unavailable for the next couple of days because of his mothers 77th birthday.

The current MultiZilla versions, including the latest nightly, should not be used with MultiZilla v1.6.2.Xx. There will be a new version of MultiZilla available after HJ finished his work for the new Permission Manager.

MultiZilla will break, or not be completely functional, when used with Mozilla builds 20040211 and higher.
