News archive for 2006

This is our news archive for the year 2006. A year full of things to remember and look back at. Our sixth year on mozdev.org for which we like to take this oppertunety and say: "Thank you" to the people behind mozdev.org; Pete Collins, David Boswell, Brian King et all. The year Michael (HJ's oldest son) took over as Project Lead (at age 14!) with help of some great community members like Raj. Thanks guys. You are the best!

MultiZilla 1.8.3.0a has been released. You can download this new release from our installation.html. All bugs should be reported to our Bugzilla.

We are constantly trying to improve the website and as such we sometimes have to change things that effect you, like today. Below you'll find the steps to follow, or you won't be able to read the new feed content:

  • open the sidebar (Menu View - > Show/Hide - > Side Bar)
  • select this feed in the upper tree
  • right click to open context menu
  • change http://multizilla.mozdev.org/news/news.xml into http://multizilla.mozdev.org/news/news.php
  • click on 'Keep Changes'
  • right click to open context menu
  • select 'Refresh Feed(s)'

The good thing of this change is that we're one step closer to implementing feed comments, and that it makes it all a lot easier for us to maintain. Sort of a win win situation so to speak ;)

HJ: Right, and we're back on-line again. There might still be a few (little) things to take care of, but the server move from New York to OSUOSL in Oregon went pretty smoothly. At least so far.

While Oregon isn't exactly in my backyard, and I don't have anything with the state itself nor with OSUOSL, but at least the state shares the same timezone. I had to change some of our PHP code, but that was easy. Note that the way I did it should take care of future changes to the timezone. No more editing. Note that we still have to fix the RSS2HTML converter to display the dates in the proper (read your) timezone, and we will, but not before releasing MultiZilla v1.8.3.0b ;)

Thanks to the mozDev crew, who in my eyes already made the move a huge success!

Raj: Just a reminder about the Mozdev server migration tomorrow (Tuesday 3rd October 2006). All Mozdev services will be offline. There is also the possibility of further downtime later to iron out migration issues, so please be patient.

HJ: on Tuesday, 3 October, will the mozdev.org server be migrated to a new server hosted at OSUOSL. During the day the site will be unavailable while data is being transfered. More info about this later this week.

Raj: There appears to be a problem affecting MozDev which is causing particular problems for the MultiZilla website at the moment. The front page and installation pages of our website are down. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Update: This is now fixed (not our error).

HJ: A new experimental nightly (For Testers Only) version of MultiZilla v1.8.3.0a, is now available for download.

  • - introducing context menus for bookmark menus
  • - article tabs in the Feed Viewer are now even more polished

This is NOT multiviews-nightly.jar!

This file (multizilla-nightly.jar) includes: multiviews.jar (aka our nightly of MultiZilla v1.8.3.0a), mzWebFeeds.js and mzWebFeeds.xpt which you need to expand/copy to the appropriate directories, being chrome/ and components/

Note for testers: please don't file bug reports for our nightlies, but join me in the newsgroup, and a big ‘Thank You’ to testers who help me to make a better product. Let me know what you think of this update, in our newsgroup please ;)

HJ: our navigation menu didn't work properly, but you might not have noticed it. It was just a small but annoying thing and we should have fixed a long time ago. I don't know why but we missed it, until now.

  • - tabs, at the top of our pages, should be polished
  • - text color of (sub)menus for the corresponding web page should be white
  • - (sub)menus for the corresponding web page should be plain text, and the mouse cursor for these items should be the default mouse pointer instead of a pointer (hand).

We hope you like, notice even, the changes. However small they might look to you, it was still a lot of work for me, like six freaking long hours >:D to figure out how to make the darn PHP code work properly...but I did it :-P

HJ: A new experimental nightly (For Testers Only) version of MultiZilla v1.8.3.0a, is now available for download.

This update includes:

  • - one more tooltip issue fixed
  • - patch for bug 15042

This update includes:

  • - the GoogleBox preference panel was missing in GoogleBox v1.7d
  • - there was this ‘Error: no element found’ XML error at startup
  • - my e-mail address has been updated

Note: GoogleBox v1.7c was released on September 2, after Philip Chee reported a bug in the newsgroup which was quickly fixed by Michael. The next release, GoogleBox v1.7d, has also been released quietly. This on September 7, and by me this time. This release only included the patch for bug bug 15096 which btw was reported by Raj (our web master).

Please note that all bugs have been reported against SeaMonkey 1.5 nightlies so you might not even have noticed any of these problems.

HJ: The mozdev.org team writes:

“In September 2000, mozdev was launched as a free project hosting service for Mozilla developers. Since then, over 1000 projects have been started and the community has grown and thrived. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed time, energy or money over the past 6 years and we look forward to another year of serving the open source community.”

Congratulations, and a big ‘Thank You’ for the mozdev.org team members. You guys did a bang on job during the last six years!

Michael: Good new, my dad (HJ) has returned save and sound and will take over as project lead again (school starts Wednesday for me). Thank you for your time, help and support. I hope that I was of help to you, and if not see you next time. Bye-bye for now ;)

Raj: A new nightly of MultiZilla v1.8.3.0a for SeaMonkey v1.0 and trunk is available. This fixes many bugs, and makes MultiZilla compatible with current SeaMonkey trunk (1.5a) nightlies. You can download the experimental nightly jar from here. (To install find your multiviews.jar [in either the profile/chrome or program/chrome directory] and overwrite it with this jar.)

Michael: MultiZilla v1.8.2.0i for SeaMonkey v1.0 has been released. This update includes a patch for bug 14115, bug 14116 and bug 14116 and you can either install or download MultiZilla right now.

Raj: MultiZilla version 1.8.2.0e for SeaMonkey v1.0 has been released. This build contains some fixes for the close tab menu as described in bug 13962. Please allow 24 hours for the mirrors to update before downloading.

Raj: MultiZilla version 1.8.1.2a has been released. This build contains some funky new Javascript Console stuff as well as fixes for the tab manager and the UA Spoofing menu in the QuickPrefs menu is now working again. Please allow 24 hours for the mirrors to update before downloading.

Raj: A new MultiZilla experimental nightly is available (please allow up to 24 hours for the mirrors to update). If you use this nightly, then please also replace your existing useragent.rdf file (in your profile directory) with this one (again, allow 24 hours for the mirrors to update).

Raj: The MultiZilla project is five years old today. HJ started the project on 1st April 2001 and released a first public version on on 28 April 2001. I think you'll agree that we've come a long way over the past five years. I joined the project as webmaster in 2002 after the former one left (to get his university degree) and having used MultiZilla since not far from the start.

We'd like to thank all our users for sticking with us, filing bugs and making suggestions. Let's hope that MultiZilla keeps going for another five years and beyond!

HJ: Thank you Raj, and thank you to everyone who helped me in the past and still help me today. Gifts and donations for the 5th anniversary (or for my birthday) are welcome as the saga continues :’)

Raj: A new MultiZilla experimental nightly is available (please allow up to 24 hours for the mirrors to update).

HJ: yikes, the download link on the installation page was broken, but is now fixed again. Thanks to JW 'Yawn' vanLohuizen for the tip!

HJ: the bookmark menus in SeaMonkey stayed empty when MultiZilla was used with recent trunk builds, this because of bug 328464 in SeaMonkey, but this bug has been fixed in SeaMonkey build 2006022710 so go get it.

HJ: MultiZilla’s User Agent Manager is broken in recent trunk builds, this is caused by a re-write/update of mozilla template builder, but we hope to fix it along with RFE 12291 in a near future update of the experimental nightly.

HJ: MultiZilla v1.8.1.1c for SeaMonkey v1.0 has been released with a patch to fix installation problems for new installations and you can either install or download MultiZilla right now.

We also changed some ID's to match with the anchors on the updated help pages for the Tab Manager, Tab Session Manager, User Agent Manager and Preference Manager (in progress). Please note that the help page for the Permission Manager has not change yet!

Update: we now also have a new experimental nightly of MultiZilla with a workaround for a template bug in recent trunk builds. People that use trunk builds, and have problems with bookmark menus being empty should download this file and replace their copy of multiviews.jar with it (yes, you have to rename it to multiviews.jar).

Note: you must exit SeaMonkey, including quicklaunch before you can replace multiviews.jar properly!

HJ: MultiZilla v1.8.1.1b for SeaMonkey v1.0 has been released with a patch for bug 11828.

You can either install or download MultiZilla after the download mirrors are in sync with the main download server in New York.

HJ: MultiZilla v1.8.1.1a for SeaMonkey v1.0 has finally been released!

You can either install or download MultiZilla after the download mirrors are in sync with the main download server in New York.

No, I’m not going to add a list with all fixed bugs (1023 in total) so you just have to install this release and find out what changed yourself. One thing I want to mention in that a lot of work was done to fix bugs in the Tab Session Manager and Session Save/Restore.

Have Fun!

Fixed bug for the Feed Reader sidebar:

  • bug 12937 Web Feeds sidebar forgets read status of posts.

There is a large number of small annoyances in MultiZilla that I want to fix for our next release. Most of them require only little changes, but some take more time to fix. Most people probably never noticed it, or nobody cared enough to file bug reports, but I want to improve the overall quality of MultiZilla, time for me to fix them so here’s a short list of my latest work:

Fixed bugs in the Tab Session Manager’s Properties Window:

  • it should be possible to change the location of a tab (location should be a textfield).
  • the menu list for ’Automatic Reloads’ throws JavaScript errors (in specific cases).
  • ’Save Changes’ button is enabled when settings are changed, even if you undo them.
  • the text on the cancel button should be “Back” and not “Cancel” when settings are changed.
  • the ESC key should ask for confirmation when settings are changed (broken by changes in mozilla).
  • the dialogs cancel button (Cancel/Back) should be the default button.

Fixed bugs in the Extension Management Window:

  • the text “Target Extensions” should be “Target Extension(s)”.
  • the text “Activate Extensions” on the accept button should be “Activate” for a single extension.
  • the text “Deactivate Extensions” on the accept button should read “Deactivate” for a single extension.

Fixed bugs in the User Agent Manager’s Preference Window:

  • the ESC key should ask for confirmation when settings are changed (broken by changes in mozilla).
  • the dialogs cancel button (Cancel/Back) should be the default button.

Fixed bugs in the Tab Manager’s Preference Window:

  • the ESC key should ask for confirmation when settings are changed (broken by changes in mozilla).
  • the dialogs cancel button (Cancel/Back) should be the default button.

HJ: a new experimental nightly (revision 1.71 in CVS) of MultiZilla v1.8.1.0 is now available. This update only replaces the ID of the main window of the User Agent Managers (because the help button tried to load the help page with an incorrect anchor) so that Raj can finish his work for this page.

Note: this news blurb is made public as a reference only!

HJ: a new experimental nightly (revision 1.70 in CVS) of MultiZilla v1.8.1.0 is now available. This update includes a patch for bug 12225. Please download this update and check if this bug has been fixed on your platform/OS.

Thanks for testing!

HJ: The new Contact Info page is ready. I should have known that it was close to impossible for me to finish it yesterday, especially now that I am hooked up with this ‘bad ass’ Internet connection (1.5mb/256kb, and way too expensive). I know that I am incredibly lucky to (normally) have a real high speed connection (100MB/10MB backbone), but I have troubles believing that anyone can use the former connection speed for serious purposes.

LOL I won’t work for anyone with such a slow Internet connection, would you? Hey, even my kids use a 6MB/768KB Internet connection. Ok, that might look ridiculous at first, but think about Voice over IP and VideoPhone, and other application like that. These just require a high speed connection, for long distance, or might fail.

HJ: 2006 will be our sixth year on mozdev.org and MultiZilla is still one of the oldest, and still active, projects on mozdev.org. I haven’t been as active lately as I should, but for a good reason (which I hope to blog about later this year).

A first number of bug fixes is on its way and we are also updating the website, yet again. We’ve updated the copyright information (at the bottom of the pages) and renamed menu item “Mailing list”, in the site navigation menu to “Contact Info”. This because I received an e-mail from someone that couldn’t find the login info for the newsgroup, which is not good of course. Anyway, this menu item will point to a new page (contact.html) that should be ready later today ;)
